Join us for a special hands-on workshop where you'll learn to make traditional Chumash clapper sticks—a rhythm instrument deeply rooted in tribal music and ceremony. This workshop will be led by Alan Salazar, an elder of the Chumash and Tataviam tribes, and Mona Lewis, artist and author.

Using locally foraged elderberry branches, respectfully gathered from traditional Chumash lands, participants will craft their own clapper sticks—a hollowed percussion instrument traditionally used to accompany songs and stories. Alan will share the cultural significance of the clapper stick and guide participants in the shaping and preparation of the instrument.

Once your clapper stick is complete, Mona Lewis will teach you how to make natural paints from local pigments and guide you in painting your instrument.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with Chumash cultural practices through storytelling, craftsmanship, and natural materials.

This class is suitable for adults and children, aged 9 and up. Students ages 9–12 are welcome with a registered adult to assist with the project.

We look forward to creating, learning, and honoring tradition together.
