The artist, born in 1952, and reared in England, has made California his home for over 40 years. He began showing his drawings and sculpture when he was still a student at Leeds Polytechnic in the United Kingdom, which at the time was considered to have the most avant-garde art program in all of Europe. Commonly known as ‘Leeds’ this department developed a freeform but critical and inquisitive approach to creating work, which he has described as a trial by fire enforced by peers. He moved to California in 1981 to complete an MFA, and soon after that, he joined the faculty of the College of Creative Studies at UCSB. During this time, he also began to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions across the nation, as well as produce several public artworks in Southern California, both permanent and transitory, including one on the Metro Blue Line in Los Angeles. He developed a true respect for the common cultural value of art and art institutions in general while working concurrently teaching and in art museums, as well as alternative galleries. He was able to participate in creating numerous exhibitions and handling many pieces of art during this time.
