Steve Galloway is an LA born artist who now splits his time between Santa Monica, CA and a parallel universe. In this realm, he has always drawn but truly became serious about art while attending CalArts, where he graduated in 1974. He has been the recipient of various prestigious grants and has his works part of permanent collections around the globe. Through his drawings, however, we see a world removed from the illustrious art houses in which they typically sit. At first glance, these scenes seem familiar but quickly defy all rules, expectations, and even physics. Oftentimes this involves clashing juxtapositions of modern industry with nature and anonymous figures meant to address an idea of power. Galloway tries to refrain from making statements about his intentions, though, in order to allow the audience to be free from influence. His process is meticulous, typically beginning with a preliminary drawing that he later projects onto a larger sheet of paper. The mesmerizing darkness he achieves in certain pieces is achieved by mixing charcoal and black pastel. Balancing the critical and the humorous, Galloway's works are in constant conversation with one another and create a visual dialogue that entices the viewer to wander deeper into their strange lands.
