Scott Gordon describes his artwork as a form of alchemy. He often finds raw materials on the street or among someone’s discards and shapes them into mixed media assemblage and collage pieces with new meaning. 'Ultimately, they are about magic: the magic of discovery and rebirth,' states Gordon. Gordon’s studio at the WAV in Ventura [Gordon is currently based out of California] is filled with assemblage pieces, finished and in progress, as well as collages. An eclectic assortment of objects: rusted metal pieces, discarded toys, game pieces, tickets, shells, unusual glass shapes, papers of all sorts, await their reincarnation. 'I am a big trash collector. ... In my mind nothing is above being thrown into art,' he says. Gordon didn’t discover art until college. 'I happened to take some design classes and really liked them and then took a painting class and I was hooked,' states Gordon. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting at CSU Northridge, while working full time as a computer analyst. While living in Houston, Texas, he started journaling and pasting papers in his journals. 'That is how I discovered collage,' he says. On the collages, he often paints over the pieces of paper. 'I find they are more successful when you can see little things peeking through. In my mind it makes me want to walk up and peer into this and try to unravel it,' states Gordon." - Nicole D'amore, Ventura County Star 2/5/15
