Hilary Brace's finely rendered cloudscapes and landscapes have a photographic veracity that belies their having been conceived and rendered from the artist's imagination. But unique landforms and roiling clouds imply spaces that are psychic in nature, almost primordial. Each piece seems a complete meteorological landscape, full of unexpected events of atmosphere and light. The artist invites the viewer to surrender to the logic, power and beauty of these other worlds, while slowing us down and reminding us to reconsider the instability and transience of our own. National recognition for Brace's work includes a Guggenheim Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Drawing and two Grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation; and in CA, a California Arts Council Fellowship. Solo exhibitions have been favorably reviewed in major publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Art in America and The New Yorker magazine. Brace's work has been exhibited in numerous museums in CA, such Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design, Riverside Art Museum, Bakersfield Museum of Art, Scripps and Pamona Colleges. Museum exhibitions outside of CA have included: Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; Boise Art Museum, Boise, ID; Telfair Museum of Art, Knoxville TN; Real Artways, Hartford, CT, and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA, among others.
