Ann Deiner inspects the intersection between politics and environment. Using source material such as maps, charts and printed materials, she is able to explore layers of memory like an anthropologist while creating stunningly intricate portraits of place. The connection between the viewer and space is ever-present as she records the exchange and effect that the land and people ultimately have on each other. Her artwork, while visualy captivating, also serves as a record by depicting "the way a location is inevitably changed by its inhabitants over many generations creating what the artist calls a 'hybrid space'." Originally primarily working with pen and pencil, she has now included lithographs and tapestries.Deiner has received recognition internationally and held residiencies at The Bogliasco Foundation, Genoa, Italy, Kaus Australis, Rotterdam and the American Academy, Rome.
