Originally from England, Dave Smith studied painting at University of Derby and Middlelesex University, transitioning to part-time teaching and then co-creating the reknowned Electric Colour Company. The collective delved into the design and production of shop interiors, signage, fashion accessories and custom car finishes during the 1960's, greatly influencing the London fashion scene and debuting at the iconic pop art-infused Mr. Freedom store. When the Company dissolved in 1972, Smith returned to teaching relocating to the Bahamas. He simultaneously embarked on "a prolific period of work with photo-realist and neo-pop overtones which he showed in a series of 8 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, both in Nassau and Miami, Florida." Smith's seventeen year stay impacted the budding Bahamas art movement, leading to his feature in the 2008 documentary ‘Artists of the Bahamas.’ He now resides in LA, though his multifaced work is shown worldwide. His work still draws on Carribean influence as well as commenting on contemporary American society. Smith's Lockdown series are thought provoking, exquisitely detailed and expertly shaded.
