Artist’s Statement: Gail Pine

Series: “Headlands”

It’s taken 2 decades to amass a large archive of found photos and vintage postcards in order to begin making mixed portraits that combine the two. I prefer linen postcards when I can find the appropriate ones. “Headlands” expands upon my ongoing work that battles with identity. The subjects of these portraits are never really revealed. The mystery of their accurate and “real” identities have been cut away and replaced by benign, sometimes dark and other times bucolic landscapes. I feel that this mystery is a part of the work while self-reflection is also at play.

A museum curator of works on paper once said (and I am paraphrasing a bit) that the currency we pay as snapshot collectors is that of time, not money. It’s true. It’s taken over 2 decades for me to amass enough photos and postcards in order to make portraits that are meaningful to me.

For this body of work, the titles were quotes extracted directly from Mamie Till Mobley’s writings, whose son (Emmett Till’s) face was rendered unrecognizable, after white supremacists in Mississippi in the 1950s tirelessly and brutally beat him, then murdered him.
