Since the beginning of history, human beings have used visual images to signify concepts, beliefs, and ideas. In this course on the history of symbolism in art, students will explore the universality of visual vocabularies and how artists have used images of the earth (stone,) animals, and geometric forms (the circle) in some of their most powerful pieces.

In this 8 week course for adults, students will create 4 interpretive surrealist paintings: 1] a symbolic rock painting (such as Magritteís floating stones,) 2} a symbolic animal painting (such as Kahloís parrots and monkeys,) 3] a painting using circles and orbs as symbols [such as, Daliís clocks,] and 4] a more abstract painting using abstract symbols [as in the works of Kandinsky and Miro.

This course will give student a solid foundation in oil and/or acrylic painting (studentís choice.) This will include lessons on color mixing, color theory, various types of brushstrokes, spatial relations, and the use of rhythm and form.
