In this course, students will learn to develop their graphic design skills. They will be working on two projects: first an illustrated travel brochure and then a cd cover using graphic elements. Through the assigned projects, students will learn foundational design principles, including balance, unity, contrast, shape, line, and value. They will also be encouraged to explore the world of hand drawn typography. Students will start with the travel brochure. They will explore the elements of design and be instructed on the importance of research in the development of a detailed illustration. Then they will move on to the cd cover project and be allowed to explore the process of visual communication through simple graphic elements.

SURREALIST PEN AND INK
SUMMER WEEK 1

Explore the depths of your imagination. Reveal your wildest dreams. By using the techniques of the Surrealists, explore your subconscious as a valid form of reality. In this course students will be given a solid foundation in basic drawing techniques (contour drawing, cross hatching, scumbling, etc.) and the elements and principles of design (color, line, space, etc.) Then they will learn about the Surrealists and their revolutionary attempts to plum the subconscious and release their true creative potential. For their project, students will take what they have learned and merge it all together to create dream-like, surreal images inspired by the works of Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Merit Oppenheim, and their contemporaries.

MIXED MEDIA MANIA
SUMMER WEEK 3

Explore the wonderful world of mixed media! Mixed media is a great way to learn about different mediums and techniques including painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. Projects will encourage creative expression, concept development, and advancement of painting skills. Painting experience is not essential. Pack a snack and beverage and dress in clothes you won’t mind getting messy in. FULL DAY OPTION:If you are looking for a full day camp, sign up for the afternoon session separately. A supervised lunch time is included for full days, kids need to pack a lunch, a snack and a beverage.

Color Linocut Workshop

Create multiple color linocut cards in this 3 hour beginner’s workshop. Learn the basics of an old art form popular once again. Use your own hands to create colorful cards of your own design.

So what is a linocut? A linocut is a print similar to a woodcut only the design is carved out of a rubber block (called a lino block) instead of a piece of wood. Rubber is much easier to carve making this an easy way to print a design.

In this workshop you will learn how to transfer a design onto lino blocks, what tools to use and how to carve your design, and how to print your design in multiple colors. You will also learn some of the basic elements of design: Line, Shape, Form, Color, and Composition.

Combining journaling and art, this class offers participants a unique opportunity to explore a variety of techniques in journal making, drawing, painting, collage, and more. Visual journaling is about connecting with your inner self and expressing yourself freely. This class will look at the intersections between imagination and making, sharpen observational skills, and a kick-start a practice of journaling.
